We offer a range barrier materials that are combination foil and polyethylene designed to offer moisture, vapor and UV protection for products and machinery during shipping and storage.  Ideal for moisture barrier bags and protective covers, the materials listed below are commonly referred to as ‘mylar’ though they are really combinations of polyethylene and foil. Internationally, these materials are referred to as “alu foil” or “alufoil.“All materials are available as bags, tubes, sheets & rolls.

Mylar is used in a wide range of applications because of its high tensile strength, chemical and dimensional stability, transparency, reflectivity, gas and aroma barrier properties and electrical insulation.  Mylar can also be metalized to create a “mylar foil;” a material that reflects more UV light than plain Mylar and that is much less permeable to gases.

Because so many people automatically consider Mylar to be metallic, €œmylar€ is often used as a generic term to refer to almost any foil lined, plastic, flexible barrier material.

The general public associates Mylar with shiny, metalic-looking party balloons. However, Mylar in its original state contains no metal at all.  Mylar is DuPont’s brand name for a polyester film that is semi-transparent, light-weight, and flexible. Mylar is technically known as biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate, or BoPET.  For most industrial and manufacturing applications, material with a layer of foil is best suited to protect from corrosion and other airborne qualities.
