SILICA GEL

Silica gel can be compared to a miniature dehumidifier that works 24-hours a day, seven days a week without the need for electricity. Initially developed prior to World War I, it was used in gas masks. By the second World War, silica gel was placed near crucial supplies such as penicillin to keep it dry. Today, silica gel remains one of the most effective ingredients in modern desiccants.

Humidity--even in relatively low doses--is one of the major causes of corrosion. Whether for transportation or storage, using desiccants, such as those made with silica gel, is a simple way to reduce the overall moisture in an enclosed space. In fact, silica gel is capable of absorbing upwards of 40 percent of the humidity surrounding it.

In cases where moisture needs to be eliminated entirely, the use of powerful desiccants such as silica gel may not be enough. To that end, moisture barrier bags can provide the level of protection required. When used in conjunction with silica gel, the levels of moisture can be reduced to infinitesimal levels. The use of indicating silica gel can also be a great help, as the product will literally change color as it absorbs moisture, providing an easy point of reference to monitor.

At Protective Packaging Corporation, we are one of the largest distributors of silica gel desiccants in the United States. From pharmaceutical grade to military grade, our experts can help you determine your exact packaging needs. Our products can be ordered from our website or by calling us directly via our toll free phone number.

Silica gel has the highest moisture adsorption capacity of any commercial desiccant making it one of the most effective ingredients for products designed to prevent corrosion during transportation and storage.

Made synthetically from sodium silicate and sulfuric acid, silica gel is a solid, granular substance with an extremely porous molecular structure that closely resembles a sponge.  It is non-hazardous and can absorb upwards of 40% of its weight in water vapor at 100% humidity.

FEATURED PROCESS

State Fair of Texas - On-site
Contrary to popular belief, not all rides travel the state fair routes as carney folklore narrates. Many of the large rides and equipment are left due to size, location, and cost. A certain "skyrocket" was left this year to ride out the four seasons until next year's fair. Rust was already begining to form by the time we arrived, so we had to spray the valves and engines down with VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) and place a specially designed cover over the sixty foot tower. Our man made cover is reinforced by double threaded seams as well strapping and grommets to be roped for added strength and durability. The goal was to protect the ride from all conditions as well as be able to re-use the cover for years to come. Strapped and clipped into the crane, PPC workers lifted the cover over the ride and fastened the material in less than two hours. Pictures a year from now should reveal the handy work of professionals.
