Although it is referred to as a gel, silica gel is actually an extremely porous and granular form of silica derived synthetically from sodium silicate. Indicating silica gel simply provides a built-in humidity gauge--the desiccant literally changes color as it absorbs moisture. Humidity indicator cards are exactly as their name describes--cards that are placed within a package to monitor the current levels of humidity. These cards also use a simple color-coded system.
Moisture barrier bags are another effective pharmaceutical packaging product. Such materials are only necessary if there is a need to completely eliminate any moisture from getting to the product.
