Properly packing products for storage and transportation isn't limited to a little padding. There are a number of invisible threats that can cause extensive damage if overlooked. Humidity, for example, is the primary cause of corrosion. For certain machinery and sensitive equipment, even exposure to low levels of moisture is sufficient to cause expensive deterioration in a short period of time. One of the most effective ways to eliminate the threat of humidity is to use moisture barrier bags. These bags are manufactured with a material that literally keeps moisture out. It is important to note that not all moisture barrier bags are built equally. The material used has an MVTR rating, which represents the amount of moisture that can seep in over time within specific conditions. Currently the best available material has an MVTR of 0.02.
In addition to using moisture barrier bags, desiccants
can also be extremely useful. Desiccants are made of materials
that absorb the surrounding moisture. Placed inside the moisture barrier
bags they can eliminate any existing moisture and absorb the infinitesimal
amount of humidity that may get within over time. Combining the
two products is the best way to eliminate any possibility of corrosion.
