One of the major causes for corrosion is moisture. Even the smallest levels of moisture can lead to corrosion if a product isn't properly protected. Many people erroneously believe that if an item doesn't get wet, it's protected. Nevertheless, much like wearing a raincoat, even if certain materials can keep water from getting in, humidity can still find a way around. The most effective way to provide complete corrosion protection is by sealing a product within a moisture barrier bag. Furthermore, it is important to know the MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate) of the material used in the bag first. This rating details the amount of moisture that can transfer through the material within 24 hours in 200 percent humidity at 100ยบ F. Currently, the most effective material has an impressive MVTR rating of .002 grams. A second solution for corrosion protection is the use of vapor corrosion inhibitors, or VCIs. These are chemicals that are applied directly to a product, thus creating a layer of protection from surrounding moisture and reducing the chances of corrosion developing. A final approach involves the use of desiccants. Although they can provide some protection when used on their own, desiccants are far more effective when used in combination with one of the two prior solutions. At Protective Packaging Corporation, corrosion protection is one of our specialties. We pride ourselves on using only the highest quality materials in the manufacture of our moisture barrier bags. We are also one of the largest distributors of desiccants in the United States. No matter what your packaging needs are, we will work closely with you to find the best corrosion protection solution.
