Without using the proper protective packaging materials, corrosion is a serious problem that can develop rapidly. With the main cause for corrosion being humidity, eliminating it requires keeping moisture away. This can be done in a variety of ways, including: moisture barrier bags, desiccants, vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCI) or even a combination of the previously mentioned products.
Moisture barrier bags are made of a specific material designed to keep moisture out. As long as the right material is used, it is one of the most effective forms of corrosion prevention available. To determine the quality of the material, one should refer to the MVTR rating. The rating refers to the grams of moisture that can penetrate the material within a 24-hour period in 95 percent humidity. Currently the best materials have an MVTR rating of 0.02.
Desiccants are products that are used to absorb surrounding moisture. Typically coming in small packets, they are generally non-toxic and can be used in conjunction with moisture barrier bags. Vapor corrosion inhibitors, also known as VCIs, are chemicals used directly on the product that needs to be protected. They are designed to create an invisible barrier, keeping moisture at bay. Not every product requires the same type of protection. At Protective Packaging Corporation we have over 25 years of experience in the industry. Our experts work closely with our clients to find customized solutions for their needs. We approach each case differently, choosing the best corrosion-prevention solutions per situation.
