Corrosion Protection: Moisture Barrier Materials
The environment of the product can be controlled by placing the product inside a moisture barrier bag. Once
the product is inside the sealed bag, very little moisture can penetrate the material, assuming the correct moisture
barrier materials are used. These materials will also protect against oxygen, salt spray, aromas, grease and other
airborne contaminants. There are several moisture barrier materials on the market, many of which meet the tough
Military Specified qualifications. Protective Packaging can tell you what the best materials for your products
are.
The moisture barrier qualities of packaging materials are measured by what is called the Moisture Vapor
Transmission Rate (MVTR). The best moisture barrier materials on the market today have an MVTR of .02. That means that
a maximum of .02 grams of moisture can enter the bag within a 24-hour period of time, in 95% humidity and 100
degrees Fahrenheit. In contrast, a 4 mil poly bag has an MVTR of .33 grams. Even though a raincoat made from
poly can repel the rain, humidity can penetrate easily through the poly material, thus creating the atmosphere ideal for
the forming of corrosion.
The only way to provide a 100% guarantee that there will be no corrosion is to place your product inside a
moisture barrier bag. As long as the bag remains intact, and the product was placed inside the bag within a
controlled-humidity area, the product will be safe from corrosion for a long time. No other product or process
can make that claim. Desiccants (moisture-absorbing materials) can be placed within the bag to absorb any moisture
that may be trapped inside the bag when it is closed. This will provide additional protection against corrosion.
A guarantee of 20+ years of protection can be provided.
Moisture barrier bags can be manufactured in various materials and
all shapes and sizes, from helicopters to hair pins. Provide Protective
Packaging Corporation with the measurements of your product and we can
tell you the size of bag you will need.
